Heart attack - Warning Signs

Heart attack is a leading cause of death among men and women in all parts of the world. But the good news is 85% of heart attacks do not cause death. Awareness of the symptoms relating to heart attack and timely medical care can minimize the stress on the body due to a heart attack and even save a life. There are several causes for a heart attack. These include hereditary factors, stress, smoking, lack of physical exercise, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. If you or someone you know has an increased risk of heart attack, it makes sense to understand the symptoms or warning signs that indicate a heart attack.

There are some early symptoms of heart attack which need to be taken care of. A visit to your doctor will tell you whether you are prone for a heart attack or otherwise. The early symptoms are:•    Dizzy spells •    Discomfort following meals •    Shortness of breath, after slight exertion. •    Fatigue •    Pain or tightness in the chest radiating into the arms •    A sense of numbness or a severe pain in the center of the chest •    PalpitationsIf you have any of these symptoms, schedule an appointment with your physician for further diagnosis. Early diagnosis, regular medication and a change in lifestyle can greatly reduce your chances of having a heart attack.The American Heart Association says the body is likely to send one or more of these warning signals of a heart attack: •    Uncomfortable pressure in the chest area that lasts for sometime•    Squeezing or pain in the center of the chest lasting more than a few minutes. •    Mild to intense pain radiating to the shoulders, neck or arms. It may feel like pressure, tightness, burning, or heavy weight. It may be located in the chest, upper abdomen, neck, jaw, or inside the arms or shoulders. •    Chest discomfort with lightheadedness, fainting, sweating, nausea or shortness of breath. •    Anxiety and/or cold, sweaty skin. •    Paleness •    Increased or irregular heart rate. Any person experiencing any of these symptoms, may possibly be experiencing a heart attack.  It is best that such a person is rushed to a nearby hospital for proper care and treatment.
